Laid down in 1893, the U.S.S. New York was designated an armored cruiser. She was Admiral Sampson's flagship at the Battle of Santiago.

The Spanish American War Centennial web site has some excellent pictures of the New York as well as an operational history of the ship. The The Naval Historical Center also has additional photos of the ship during her operational years.

Renamed the U.S.S. Rochester in order to allow the use of her original name for the Dreadnought battleship BB-34, the ship eventually joined the Pacific Fleet and was decommissioned in 1933 in the Philippines.

In 1942, the ship was scuttled in Subic Bay to prevent its capture by the approaching Imperial Japanese forces. The wreck is situated between Alavar Pier and the northern end of the runway. The former New York lies on its port side in approximately 87 feet of water. The wreck is now a diving attraction.
